Data engineering provides the foundations for FinOps

·1 min

Following on from yesterdays post about measuring for reporting and measuring for action, one data-driven initiative I’m working on is our FinOps program.

FinOps is something I know many of us are thinking more about these days, as we take a closer look at our costs, and is defined by the FinOps Foundation as:

An operational framework and cultural practice which maximizes the business value of cloud, enables timely data-driven decision making, and creates financial accountability through collaboration between engineering, finance, and business teams.

So, a great FinOps culture is built on a foundation where the right data is provided at the right time so people can take the right actions for the organisation.

Which is a subset of a great data culture.

Good data engineering provides the foundation for a great data culture.

And good data engineering provides the foundation for a great FinOps culture.
