Carmelite Church and the Chapel of Bones, Faro, Portugal

·1 min

I recently visited the Carmelite Church (Igreja do Carmo) in Faro whilst on holiday in the Algarve. Looks quite nice from the outside…

The inside is also quite impressive, decorated with gold and elegant statues…

But hidden behind it is something very different….

The Chapel of Bones is made from 1250 human remains, as the monks decided that they were cheaper and more effective, or so the story goes…

Strange place, and a little bit spooky, especially with the wind hissing through the gaps in the bones. You can see more photos on Flickr.
